Oratorio rupestre de Valdecanales
Monument
23430, Rus How to get
The Valdecanales rock oratory, located 6 km from the town, dates from the Visigothic period (7th century) and is the only known example of its kind in the south of the peninsula.
Information
It is a hypogeum that consists of three caves carved into the rock, of which the largest has a monumental façade simulating a porch in the form of blind arches, with horseshoe arches and tympanums decorated with palmettes of classical tradition, all carved into the slope of ground. Inside there is a chapel with three naves with barrel vaults on square pilasters. The other two caves, of simpler resolution, must have served one as a residence for the monks who lived in the oratory, and the other possibly as a baptistery.
It was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1970.
Another place of worship or Visigoth monastery existing in the municipality of Rus, 12 km from the town, is the so-called "Cueva de la Veguilla", recently located.
