After it was restored, the castle was turned into a cultural centre where most of the activity in Torredonjimeno takes place. It also houses the Visitor Centre, which tells the story of the Visigoth treasure that was found by chance in the vicinity of the town in the early 20th century. The treasure is considered to be the second most important Visigoth legacy in Spain after the one found in Guarrazar, Toledo. Currently, its original pieces are divided among several Spanish museums.

The fortress, which stands near the Town Hall (built in the Mannerist style) and the church of San Pedro, is one of the most relevant monuments of Torredonjimeno’s historical and archaeological heritage. As a matter of curiosity, the castle served as accommodation for Fernando III on one of his journeys. Moreover, according to tradition, the Commander of the Order of Calatrava wrote the first book on the art of bullfighting in the hall of what was once the castle’s keep. The book was printed in the 16th century and the only known remaining copy is kept in the Library of Salamanca.

The castle of Torredonjimeno was built by the Arabs to defend the population of a small farmstead. It was a rectangular fortress, of medium size, which was extensively renovated by the Order of Calatrava after the Christian conquest. A tower from that period can be seen in the courtyard of the public school called Puerta de Martos. The tower is joined to another tower by curtain walls one and a half metres thick, although the second tower has been considerably changed after subsequent remodelling work. It can be spotted from Calle Cantera.

The castle became a stately residence at the end of the Middle Ages. Part of the 16th century mansion, which boasts rooms with Mudejar-style polychrome wooden ceilings, can be viewed inside the castle.
