Juntas de Miller

, Segura de la Sierra

This revealing name describes the union of two major rivers which both flow through the Segura mountains, namely the Zumeta and the Segura. It is here, in this beautiful, peaceful spot, that the conjoined rivers leave Jaén behind and flow into the province of Albacete. From a vantage point up on the bridge it is easy to picture the old pineros, or pinecutters, preparing the trunks to be floated along the two rivers on an amazing journey out to the Mediterranean, using nothing more than a two-headed, chestnut-handled hook.

In the 1950s a hamlet sprung up in this location and took the name of the area, Las Juntas de Miller, as its own. It was created in order to house the workers who had been hired to construct the Miller hydraulic station, and to supply this station with water the Anchuricas and La Vieja reservoirs, fed by the River Segura and River Zumeta were also constructed. The respective heights from which water falls from these dams are 185 metres and 195 metres.

Magnificent views of Las Juntas can be enjoyed from the area known as Loma del Paerón, and in order to reach it we recommend you follow the route of the same name, which also has the reference number PR-A 108. From Loma del Paerón a natural viewing point opens up before you, offering splendid panoramas of the valleys through which flow the Zumeta and Segura and the point at which they merge.

Opposite are the Cañas de la Muela, home to a large colony of griffon vultures, along with the ancient Iberian settlement of Peñón de los Almendros and the hamlet of Góntar. This truly is a magical zone that is well worth the effort to discover.

We recommend…

  • If you arrive at Las Juntas de Miller after having walked a good distance, and having taken in sights such as the village of Miller, the majestic crag of Calar del Cobo and the Cueva (cave) de los Anguijones, you will undoubtedly feel like having a dip in the reservoir (only during the summer, of course!).
  • Finding out about and remembering the history of the Segura pinecutters, who up until the 1950s transported wood along the rivers with the help of hooks and draft animals.
  • Valles del río Segura y Zumeta (“Valleys of the Segura and Zumeta Rivers”) is the ideal book for those who wish to go hiking in the area, as it details a series of routes you are bound to adore with precision and in-depth knowledge .
