Program

The route is 45 Km long. It departs from the Borosa fish farm and ends in Hornos de Segura. We recommend that you plan for at least one full day. There are a number of tourist accommodations en route.

Km 0 – Fish Farm and Borosa River Visitors Centre. The Centre explains the importance of the Nature Reserve's river ecosystems, which are home to emblematic species such as the trout and otter.

Km 1.7 - Torre del Vinagre. This is one of the most popular areas in the Nature Reserve, situated in a privileged geographical enclave due to its central location. Don´t miss the Nature Reserve's Visitor Centre, which was recently renovated and boasts many interactive resources. It has a Nature Reserve shop, toilets, cafeteria, lounge area and an outdoor children's playground. The Botanical Garden is situated very close to the centre and possesses an extensive and well cared for selection of plants from the Nature Reserve, from small grasses to big trees. It is the perfect place to observe and learn how to identify plants or simply to enjoy a pleasant stroll amidst lush vegetation.

Km 6.5 - Coto Ríos. This village, on the banks of the Guadalquivir, was built in the 1960's to house families living in scattered hamlets and farms whose houses were expropriated to create the Cazorla-Segura National Hunting Reserve (now the Andalusian Hunting Reserve). The village includes medical care facilities, shops and other services, as well as several campsites.

Km 13.3 – Collado del Almendral Wildlife Park. Red deer, mountain goats, fallow deer and mouflon graze in relative freedom within this reserve. You can observe and photograph them while taking a pleasant stroll along a route that includes fountains, benches and several viewpoints affording wonderful panoramas of the Tranco reservoir and the ruins of the Bujaraiza castle.

Km 14 - FRF Viewpoint. This is one of the landmarks on the Route bearing the same name, dedicated to the legendary naturalist, Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente, who in the 1970's filmed the famous scenes of deer during the rutting season in this location. Mount Bujaraiza is opposite. Sometimes, when the reservoir is very full, it becomes an island crowned by the ruins of an Arab tower.

Km 17.6. – Huerta Vieja Controlled Camping Area. This is a very pleasant place to take a break and have a bite to eat, when not occupied by campers.

Km 19.2 – Los Casares Craftwork House. This is an old forest house converted into a shop selling craftwork and typical products from the Nature Reserve.

Km 26 – Control Viejo Recreational Area. This extensive zone was recently constructed and affords magnificent views of the northern area of the Tranco reservoir. It is equipped with benches, picnic tables and a fountain.

Km 28.4 Tranco Dam - This impressive dam, standing 82 m above the Guadalquivir river, is one of the largest in Spain. There are several restaurants, outdoor cafés and nautical sports facilities in the area, as well as the town erected to house the workers who built the dam.

Km 31.5 – Los Parrales Recreational Area. Situated in an Aleppo pine forest, it has a viewpoint that overlooks the waters of the Tranco reservoir.

Km 35.7 - Cañada Morales. When you reach this village, the landscape, up to this point consisting exclusively of woodlands, gives way to extensive areas of developed land, with olive groves, orchards and scattered farmhouses.

Km 44.6 - Hornos de Segura. This small town, perched on top of a crag, is in the heart of the Nature Reserve. Its monuments, viewpoints and narrow irregular streets, a legacy of its Moorish past, secured its declaration as a Historical / Artistic Site.
