Jaén is a land of contrasts: from craggy sierras covered by a wild vegetation to orchards and fertile fields mainly devoted to olive tree growing, all of which constitute a luxurious, varied and eye-catching landscape.

The province is surrounded on all sides by mountains, except in the western part, where the river Guadalquivir gently runs through a wide valley of the same name. To the north we find Sierra Morena, a range of hills and mountains home to cattle exploitations, autoctonous forests and reforested tracts in rough areas. To the south and east we find the northern section of the Baetic System, where the steepness of the land and the abundance of water have contributed to the spread of magnificent forests and undergrowth, a precious ecological niche for many animal species.

The unique conjunction of a wide variety of environmental features in Jaén (geological, edaphological, climatic...) has shaped the province into one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in Spain and Europe.

This profusion of plants and animals, together with a very well-preserved landscape, will amply satisfy the most demanding nature-lovers and countryside enthusiasts.

As a result of this wealth of natural gifts, the province of Jaén can boast the largest number of protected lands (304.175 ha. / 751.632 ac.) in Spain : 4 Natural Parks, 3, Natural Areas, 2 Natural Reserves, 5 Natural Monuments and 2 Periurban Parks. Within all these protected natural areas, optimal facilities and services are provided for travellers to enjoy and make the most of their visit.
